Amalia Barov is the duchess of Illtower, the northernmost duchy of Impiltur. Born the daughter of Earl Dane Barov, she had intended to take the path of a wizard of Soargalan. However, during the Dragons' War of 1373 DR, current duke "Great Jon" Umber was slain, along with all of his issue. King Imbrar II met with his retainer lords, and decreed that Earl Barov would be created Duke of Illtower. Unforunately, later in the same war, Duke Barov and his son Erik were slain, leaving Amalia as the only possible heir. Despite protestations from the other lords of Illtower, and from the wizards of Soargalan (including Amalia herself), the King commanded her to serve as Duchess.
As Duchess
Since inheriting the duchy in 1374, she has ruled wisely, proving an excellent administrator, diplomat, and commander. She was aided in the former and latter aspects by her friends and allies from her brief adventuring career, notably Vilvelas Starym and Christian Theodericson. The latter, she would marry; despite his minor nobility (as a son of House Olden of Rilannon), his standing as a Knight of the Order of the Sacred Shrike forbids him from taking noble duty, preventing any chance of him superceding his wife as Duke of Illtower, which suited both of them, and the other lords, quite well.
Formally, she can no longer claim the title of Wizard or Enchanter, both of which she had previously and rightly earned, due to her standing as a peer of the realm. Despite this technicality, she is known to be an accomplished practitioner, especially of the arts of mentalism. Her continued use of magic, and her employment of a foreign (and elven) court wizard, instead of the traditional Soargalan-appointed aide, has caused some friction with her former masters at the tower. Their relationship is not aided by rumors that she maintains cordial contact with The Kingslayer and his band of warlocks, who are said to make their lair within her domain.
Adventuring Career and Powers
In her adventuring career, which lasted from 1370-1374 DR, she and her companions are credited with the renewal of Sessrendale, and with key victories in the Elven Crusade to restore Myth Drannor.
She is known to wield the Opalline Scepter.
Her familiar is a cat named Jinx.
